Networking Without the Ick
You’ve probably been told a million times that you need to network if you want to grow your business.
But what does that actually mean? Who are you supposed to talk to? What do you say? And how do you turn a nice chat into something that moves your business forward without feeling like a sleazy salesperson at a bad cocktail party?
Watch my YouTube video below to discover networking without the ick and build connections with the 4 types of networks you need for faster, feel-good growth!

The Early Days: When I Built a Whole Business on Networking
Way back in 2013, I started my first company, The Networking Boutique. It was this adorable little brand dedicated to helping entrepreneurs grow faster and easier through (you guessed it) networking.
The thing is, nobody cared. Entrepreneurs wanted to talk about social media, funnels, and marketing tactics, not handshakes and coffee chats.
So I pivoted. I started teaching sales and visibility and marketing… but underneath it all, I was still teaching networking.
Because no matter how many tools, funnels, or automations we add to our businesses, entrepreneurship has always been — and will always be — about people.
Why Networking Feels Icky (and How to Fix It)
Most of us were taught to think about networking as a transaction: Meet someone → Pitch your offer → Try to “close” the deal.
Gross, right?
That’s not connection; that’s selling without consent.
The truth is, good networking isn’t about hustling for leads. It’s about building relationships with people who share your values, your energy, and your goals. It’s about showing up as a human first and a business owner second.
When you focus on connection over conversion, opportunities start to flow naturally. People remember how you made them feel, not how you tried to sell them.
The Four Networks Every Entrepreneur Needs
If you want to grow your business without burning out or spinning your wheels, you don’t need to network with everyone - you need to focus on building these four key networks that will actually move your business forward:
1. Collaborators & Referral Partners
These are the folks who get what you do and love it enough to help you spread the word. They’re your strategic partners, co-creators, and connection-builders. You’ll cross-promote each other, collaborate on offers, or refer clients back and forth because you genuinely believe in each other’s work.
2. Customers
This is about networking directly with your potential customers. Too many entrepreneurs hide behind social media instead of getting out there and actually talking to the people they want to serve. When you network with your ideal customers — whether that’s in online communities, local meetups, or events — you shorten the distance between “stranger” and “happy paying client.”
These are the conversations that lead to clarity, connection, and sales calls that actually convert because the relationship was built on trust from the start.
3. Leaders (Organizations & Communities You Want to Connect To)
These are the gatekeepers, event organizers, community managers, and decision-makers who can open doors for you. Get to know them, show up in their communities, and look for ways to add value. When they see your consistency and integrity, they’ll naturally think of you for opportunities.
4. Biz Besties
Your biz besties are your entrepreneurial ride-or-dies — the people who keep you grounded, motivated, and inspired. They’re the ones you vent to after a tough client call, brainstorm with during creative blocks, and celebrate with when things go right. Building this kind of emotional support network keeps you connected and sane through the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
Networking Through the Lens of Ick-Free Sales
The Ick-Free Sales philosophy is all about consent-based selling — building relationships rooted in trust, curiosity, and shared goals.
Networking is the top of your sales funnel. It’s where you plant seeds, not where you harvest.
When you stop forcing outcomes and start focusing on connection, collaboration, and community, sales become the natural byproduct of genuine relationships.
That’s not hustle. That’s harmony.
