Top 5 Fears Stopping You From Making More Videos
Aug 28, 2023
Video marketing is one of the most underused content marketing tools for building know, like, and trust with your ideal customers, growing your email list, and showcasing your expertise.
Simply put, you have brilliance inside you begging to be brought to life on camera but there are some annoying fears holding you back ... and it's time to get over them so the world can see you shine!
Side note: It's also super easy to start showing up on video more, whether that be YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Lives and more ... when you know what to do, how to do it and get yourself into a rhythm of simple content batching!
All throughout August and September (when I'm not playing at the beach with friends) I’m going to be sharing tons of tips, tools, and how-tos for video marketing including our free workshop on September 14th and 16th called Video Marketing Made Easy where I’m going to show you 10 different ways you can use video marketing to wow your future clients in a way that’s sustainable, automated, and requires less work than you think!
But first ...
Let's talk about the top 5 fears stopping you from getting yourself out into the world on video!
1. You're Already Overwhelmed AF
We've all been there. The to-do list is a mile long, and suddenly, making a video drops to the bottom. You're busy working both in and on your business.
Heck, you might even be ADHD or Neurodivergent too which can make diving into video marketing as a new entrepreneur feel like an unclimable mountain.
Why? Because overwhelm has a sneaky way of tricking our brains into putting ourselves last or believing we can't do scary things.
And I'm not even going to pretend my own brain doesn't get sucked into overwhelm and putting my business needs last!
I'm often so busy helping other new entrepreneurs build their businesses that my own business can suffocate.
But here's a secret: Taking baby steps can make a world of difference.
✅ Instead of aiming for a full-fledged video course or YouTube channel, why not start with a short-form video like an Instagram Reel or TikTok? You could even start with a 30-second Thank You video on the confirmation page for your lead magnet! The shorter the better.
Little wins lead to big victories and when you're a busy entrepreneur struggling to spare the mental space ... this is exactly the strategy you need to set yourself up for success!
2. Coming Up with Interesting Content Ideas
Do you ever catch yourself staring at a blank screen and thinking, "What on earth am I going to talk about?"
I feel you ... I do the same thing ALL THE TIME...
Even though you and I both know our brains are FULL of wisdom, experience, and valuable content that our audiences want to hear!
Oftentimes times we have SO MUCH to say it feels impossible to narrow it down into a single concise video.
Or, if you're more of a responder like me, I need a great question to kick my brain into content creation mode ...
I can't just blurt something magical out when faced with a blank screen and endless options.
And don't even get me started on that dang ol' Impostor Syndrome whispering in your ear, "Who cares? No one's gonna watch what you post. Who do you think you are? You're not that special."
Excuse me?! Rude.
My trick?
✅ Have a notepad (or an empty envelope from your credit card statement) placed on your desk next to your hand and write down every great question you get asked when working with clients, or questions others are posting online when scrolling on social.
Before you know it, you'll have 5-10 kickass video content ideas.
If you take each question and look at it from different angles I bet you'll have at least 30 video ideas in less than 10 minutes!
Best of all, these are questions you KNOW your audience and clients are asking so you KNOW this content is wanted.

3. The Tech
Ah, the age-old fear of not having the 'perfect' video set-up.
Microphones. Lights. Tripods. Recording software. How to use it all once you get it. Whew!
The tech stops so many entrepreneurs from hopping on camera ... and it's just not necessary.
I remember when Facebook Lives first became popular and thought it was the COOLEST thing!
We could go live, in the moment, connect with people in the comments and just let loose in an unscripted and natural way.
The only thing stopping me was the tech...
And getting stuck in my head about it having to be PERFECT!
Guess how long it took me to finally go live on Facebook for the first time ...
ONE FLIPPING YEAR!
One year ... to do a silly little Facebook Live.
I was soooo in my head about it and I always had an excuse...
- The wifi connection was bad.
- I didn't have time to make notes first.
- The sound wasn't right.
- My phone was too old and the camera didn't look professional enough.
- I wasn't wearing the right outfit.
- I didn't have time today.
- And the very real excuse for us ADHDers ... the executive function wasn't executive functioning.
ONE.
YEAR.
Well, I've obviously done hundreds of live videos since then, on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Zoom, Podcasts, YouTube Live, etc. etc. etc.
Remember, every expert was once a beginner. The key is to just get started and let yourself be messy, imperfect, and give yourself the grace to figure it out as you go.
It's just not that serious.
Perfection is overrated.
Let yourself be a beginner.
✅ Start with what you have, whether it's your smartphone or a basic camera and just show up on camera and let yourself get better over time!
4. Confidence
Have you ever watched a video and thought, "Wow, they're so confident! How did they get to be this confident on camera?"
That can totally be you as soon as you release not having the confidence to be yourself.
Confidence comes from knowing who you are, believing in what you have to say, letting yourself relax, taking your time, and talking to the camera as if you're talking to a friend.
When I first started making YouTube videos I was still learning the rules and finding my own groove.
This meant I was overly rigid and stiff as my brain was more focused on getting the format right than enjoying myself when recording the content.
And guess what??
That's totally OK!
Give yourself permission to be rigid and stiff in the beginning ... trust me the confidence will come as you get more familiar with the tech and "rules" of effective video marketing and you get out of your head and into the party of being on camera.
Your confidence comes from feeling relaxed and just having a convo with the camera like you are a friend.
Don't delay your own journey from rigidity to confidence just because of a little awkwardness!
And always remember, your humanness is what draws people to you and helps them fall in love with you.
It's OK to make mistakes and fumble ... how you handle the fumbles displays your confidence level way more than your perfectionism!
✅ Practice makes perfect, and the more you record, the more confident you'll become.
And if you ever need a confidence boost, just remember why you started. Your message is important, and the world needs to hear it.

5. Video Structure
Ever rambled on video and then wondered what you were even talking about?
Been there, done that.
The solution?
Outline your videos BEFORE you hit record.
It'll make your content more streamlined, impactful, and yes, totally badass!
✅ Try this simple 5-step video framework: Hook > Bio > Content > Engagement > Call to Action
1. HOOK: An intriguing statement or question that grabs your audience's attention and drooling for more!
Don't hop on camera and start babbling about things no one cares about ... start strong with an opening statement or question that will make your audience's ears perk up.
🛑 DON'T: Hi everyone, heyyyy, how's it going? I'm so happy to be going live with y'all today. Whew, I can't believe summer is almost over. Where does the time go ... blah blah blah.
✅ DO: Friends, video marketing is the most underutilized content marketing strategy for attracting your perfect clients to you like moths to a flame yet 95% of new entrepreneurs report that these top 5 fears are stopping them from hopping on camera. Are you ready to get out of your own way? Let's do this thing...
2. BIO: A brief intro of who you are, what you do, and why you're qualified to be talking on this subject.
For example, I'll often say, "My name is Lindsay, aka The Radical Connector. I'm a huge entrepreneurship nerd and I've been teaching new entrepreneurs how to [insert topic of video] for over 20 years!"
3. CONTENT: Share the goods and remember this #1 Rule when it comes to video marketing ...
Fact Tell. Stories Sell.
Sharing facts like stats and other main talking points isn't enough.
You need to share stories, examples, and experiences to ground the facts you're sharing in something relatable your audience can sink their teeth into.
For example, go back and read point #3: The Tech.
Notice how I shared facts AND a relatable story?
You're always selling something ... even if it's just an idea or a new perspective!
Don't forget to share stories and real-life examples your audience will relate to.
4. ENGAGEMENT: Break up your content with a small engagement question or action.
For example, you can tell people to write "Heck Yah" or share their favourite X or most frustrating Y in the comments.
Giving a shoutout to viewers to engage with your content is a great way to get a lovely boost from the algorithm gods to push your content onto the pages of potential new followers.
5. CALL TO ACTION (or CTA): What do you want your viewers to do after they watch your video?
- Sign up for your email list
- Register for a workshop
- Buy a product, program, or service
- Follow you
- Watch the full video on YouTube, listen to the podcast, or read a blog
The Call to Action is often left as a last-minute afterthought... if it's even remembered at all!
Remember, as a busy AF entrepreneur you have to be strategic with your time and efforts and think about how you're using your content to achieve your business goals!
