We are well on our way into the new year.
Are you still on track to achieve your big, bold 2018 goals?
(Have you realized you maaay have bitten off more than you can chew?)
Don’t be too hard on yourself, it happens to the best of us. We get caught up in the magic of the holiday season and the possibilities of the new year. We wake up on January 1st determined, focused, and ready to take on the world…
...and we do!
We try and cram as many goals as we can into our new year plan. The only problem is, while most of us make a plan for the new year, many of us don’t think about it strategically.
(We often overestimate what we can accomplish in one year, and underestimate what we can do in three!)
That often leads to taking on too much all at once.
Instead of doing one or two things REALLY WELL, we end up trying to do way too much and either burn ourselves out or only scratch the surface of how successful we can be.
Do you want to give yourself permission to hit reset and start this year again?
LET’S DO IT!
Here are three easy steps to bring some simplicity into your 2018...
No. 1 WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?
Make a list of all of the things you want to accomplish this year.
Go through that list and cross off anything you are doing because you think you “should” or because someone else told you to do it. Only have things on that list that you REALLY want to do, or guess what? You won’t do it!
Now put a star beside the simplest and most natural things to implement in your life or business. Choose goals that will be easy to incorporate into your current life or business that will allow you to stay on the course you are already on.
For example, if you are a trainer or coach, adding in public speaking might be a good goal for the new year to generate revenue and increase your client and referral base. Starting a dog walking business on the weekends to generate revenue might not.
Go through your list again and put a great big circle around the one to two things that you REALLY want to do. You now have simpler and more doable goals for this year.
(Don’t worry, you’ll get to those other things when it’s a natural next step!)
No. 2 WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Make a to-do list incorporating all of the components required to create, launch, or achieve your goal.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't sweat it! You have all year to methodically tackle this list. Aren't you glad that you simplified your list of goals for this year?
(Side note: if Strategy isn’t your strong suit you can join me for this Simplifying Your 2018 Strategy event or book a private strategy session with me)
Next, create a work-back timeline for the launch or implementation of your goal. Pick a date to officially kick things off then work backwards to create a timeline and deadlines based on your to-do list above.
No. 3 DO IT!
Jump in with both feet | Go for it | Get started | Let’s rock!
You’ve got your what, how, and when...now it’s time to DO. Give yourself the space and time to make it happen. Remember, you’ve got a year to accomplish this so keep at it, stay focused, and follow your timeline.
It’s easy to lose focus, get distracted, or even fall off course. Especially if we feel bored or start listening to well meaning friends who suddenly have the “best” idea for our life or business.
Now is the time for those two lovely words to come out to play. Hustle and Grind.
This is when we get to hustle our buns off and make it happen. This is when we get to grind it out, day after day, and stick with it even when it feels repetitive, boring, or like we might be missing out on something shiny over there.
This is when we get to build our determination and persistence muscles.
(Ooh yeah, feel the burn!)
Continue to evaluate what’s working and what isn’t and adjust as you move through the year. Avoid jumping around from thing to thing and really give it a solid and consistent effort as you work towards your goals.
Make sure you’re having fun! If you’re not enjoying yourself that could be a signal you may not be doing what you really want to do or are out of alignment somewhere. Adjust accordingly.
Remember that nobody knows you or your business like you do! Trust your gut, stay the course, and continue to check in with how you feel so you know you’re on the right path.
Here’s to a simpler and successful new year!
